Description
The Mount Tamalpais Academy was founded in 1890 by Dr. Arthur Crosby, who was also President of the Board of Trustees. Dr. Crosby is pictured wearing a black hat, to the right of center. The board consisted of many prominent San Rafael men including William Babcock, Arthur W. Foster and Robert J. Trumbull. The school was first located at Fourth and E Streets in San Rafael, but by 1891 moved to its permanent location of Mission and Cottage Avenues. Cavalry was a part of the military training and many of the boys brought their horses to school. In 1902, a mounted artillery made Mount Tamalpais Military Academy unique in the West, and the school was internationally recognized for its military and academic training. Here, the students wear their formal dress uniforms for a school portrait. In 1925, Dr. Crosby's widow sold the school to A.L. Stewart, a local businessman. At that time the school's name was changed to the San Rafael Military Academy. The San Rafael Military Academy academics continued in the tradition of its predecessor until it closed in 1971. Since 1972, the property has been home to Marin Academy which has no military association.
