Description
Depicts the dedication plaque for the Gifford Pinchot tree in Muir Woods National Monument, circa 1910. The Pinchot tree was dedicated on May 5, 1910, in honor of the first chief of the U.S. Forest Service, Gifford Pinchot. The dedication ceremony, organized by the Sierra Club, took place just two years after Muir Woods was made a national monument by the U.S. Government. Gifford Pinchot, a conservationist, lobbied President Roosevelt to accept Kent's gift of Muir Woods in order to save the giant redwood trees for posterity. Mr. Kent made a short speech at the dedication and then provided lunch to the 300 members of the Sierra Club and their guests. Image is from the Kent Family collection
