Description
Ministers at the Berkeley Free Church conducted hundreds of weddings. In The Covenant of Peace: A Liberation Prayer Book, Jock Brown and Richard York distilled the wordings of these services into a chapter on wedding celebrations. They suggested these vows: "With this ring I marry you, With my body I honor you, With all I have I present you." One of York's projects after he left the Free Church was a book on weddings, which he never completed. His most famous wedding led to his undoing as a priest for a brief time. He performed the ceremony for Tom Hayden and Jane Fonda in Los Angeles in 1973 (they vowed to grow together, to be honest, to share responsibility for her children, and to have a sense of humor). York neglected to obtain permission from a bishop allowing him to solemnize a wedding if one of couple's spouses is still living, in this case Roger Vadim. The bishop wrote,"It is my godly judgment that you are not to exercise your sacerdotal ministry until further notice." The requirement was later dropped by the denomination.
