The Society of California Pioneers Lewis Cass Wittenmyer was born in Salsbury, Indiana on June 15th, 1828. In 1831 he and his family relocated to Newburyport, later named Saint Joseph, Michigan. In February of 1849 L.C. Wittenmyer left Michigan with five others from his town and started on their overland journey to California. While en route they joined with other emigrants and organized a company consisting of over one hundred men and forty wagons. On August 10th, 1849 L.C. Wittenmyer arrived at the gold diggings on Bear River. After several weeks mining there they continued north to Deer Creek, near Nevada City, and then to the north fork of the Yuba River. L.C. Wittenmyer continued to mine at several locations through September of 1850, at which point he moved to the Mission San Jose and proceeded to farm. He soon settled land in Contra Costa. In September 1857, he was elected to the office of County Clerk of Contra Costa County and held the position almost continuously until 1891 Autobiographies and Reminiscences of California Pioneers, p. 135-148, Vol. 6. This is a typed transcript, bound into a volume, of the member's autobiographical reminiscence created as an institutional record for the Society of California Pioneers. This reminiscence includes a reference to a photograph of the member in a set of bound volumes. It appears that the photographs in this set were dispersed throughout the regular photography collection, but the photographs referenced in the related materials may or may not be these same photographs. The period of time represented by this biography is 1840 to 1900. This account provides an outline of the life of Lewis Cass Wittenmyer. Details, such as locations, dates and travel conditions, are provided regarding his overland journey to California. Much attention is given to Mr. Wittenmyer's mining experience and travels.
