Description
"Fairview Club of '88 ", "THE WINNING NINE" group portrait of baseball players, Fairview Park, California, 1888. Image shows group studio portrait of nine members of the Fairview Club team posed against a painted backdrop, with the bats, glove, catcher's mask and sign reading "FAIRVIEW CLUB / OF '88" in front. Identified are 1. Henderson P[itcher]; 2. Dungau C[atcher]; 3. Hawks 1[st] B[ase]; 4. Wallace 2[nd] B[ase]; 5. Lee 3[rd] B[ase]; 6. Frank Harris S[hort] S [top]; 7. Crane R[ight] F[ield]; 8. Moesser, C[enter] F[ield]; 9. Moye Mgr. L[eft] F[ield]. According to information inscribed on reverse of photo mount, Frank Harris, age 25 in this portrait (b.1863 in El Monte), was an early bandmaster for Orange, California at the Orange Plaza, and homesteaded on the east side of South Tustin Street near La Veta Avenue, Orange, California. He married Lillian Butler and had a real estate business for 50 years with Harris Brothers Realty, located at 5th and Main Street, Santa Ana. [According to Samuel Armor's "History of Orange County, California," published in 1921: "Fairview, seven miles southwest of Santa Ana, is located on the northwest part of the broad mesa between the ocean and the damp lands southwest of the county seat." This would place it in Costa Mesa, California, around the area of Fairview Park.]
