Painting in gouache on board surrounded by elaborate frame or border of lace, embroidery, sequins, silk ribbon, beads, and feathers. Parchment backing. This was used as decorative panel or missal cover. The small painting depicts a female figure with sword pointed at chest. Figure holds clenched hands towards chest in prayer fashion. Her head is surrounded by a halo. She wears a greenish-blue cloak and a red dress. Written in gold on a strip of blue below the image are the words "Mater Tolorosa."
