Description
Dedication of a giant redwood tree in Muir Woods, May 5, 1910, in honor of the first chief of the U.S. Forest Service, Gifford Pinchot. This ceremony, organized by the Sierra Club, took place just two years after Muir Woods was made a national monument by the U.S. Government. Gifford Pinchot, a conservationist, lobbied President Roosevelt to accept William Kent's gift of Muir Woods in order to save the giant redwood trees for posterity. Mr. Kent made a short speech at the dedication and then provided lunch to the 300 members of the Sierra Club and their guests. Image from the Kent Family Collection.
