Description
Flier describing the South Campus Community Ministry and soliciting assistance from volunteers and supporters. Richard York brought in Glee Bishop, who had social work experience, to manage the services that were needed. She set up the switchboard and began to address the problems that the Free Church initially faced-- runaways, health and drug issues, shelter, and food. In a sermon in September 1967, York described his ministry by recounting a few individual stories: "I know a young man who has taken over one hundred cough drops and is standing on the street convulsing and foaming at the mouth from the overdose...I know a girl who is pregnant, unmarried, needs surgery, hasn't eaten in two days and has no place top sleep...I know 80 kids a night who come to us, with no place to sleep, except in a public park where they are in danger of arrest." The Free Church's assistance with runaways won support and appreciation from local and regional church officials. These services were later taken over by other agencies.
