Description
May Festival Parade, Orange, California, 1933. Image shows H. D. Nichols, a prominent citrus plant manager, and members of his family, Lawrence, Winston, and Everett Nichols, riding on a bicycle built for four. Theme for parade was Spirit of the Gay '90s. Crowds are visible in background along the sidewalks in the 100 block of North Glassell Street, with the Bank of America (102 North Glassell Street) at far left and Simon's Drug Store (106 North Glassell Street) in the center. Simon's Drugs has signage reading "CUT RATE DRUGS" and "Hires." Photograph inscribed in ink on reverse with "H.D. Nichols & / Laurence ~ Winston [and] Everett / May Day 5/33." The May Festival, which began in 1933 and also included the May Day Parade, continued to be held until 1991.
