Description
The shamisen is the principle instrument of Kabuki theatre. It is a three-stringed, fretless instrument. The genres of music played by shamisen players is nagauta, or long song, and jojuri, named after a singing style in puppet plays. Jojuri is meant to accompany the narrator as he sings the story of the play. When a shamisen player in kabuki theater plays in both nagauta and jojuri styles, this mixture of genres is called kake ai performance.
