Description
Men and their wagons and buggies and horse teams are lined up across Front Street at the intersection with West Main Street. The Turlock Hotel sign is visible on the right. Wagons are pulled up next the the Grange Company warehouse which indicated the main purpose of these men is to deliver their bags and boxes of harvested sweet potatoes. Not visible are the railroad tracks to the left of the warehouse. At this time farmers dealt with multiple buyers from throughout the country who would come to Turlock to purchase large amounts of sweet potatoes. The buyers would store them in the warehouses until arrangements were made to load them onto railroad freight cars and ship them to markets through the country. Verso: Delivering sweet potatoes and beans. John Vignolo in center in shirt sleeves; Constable Ed Shafer on horse.
