Description
St.Paul's Episcopal Church was completed in 1870 and ministered by the Revs. Dyer, Phelps and Bush. "The building is gothic in architecture, of wood, with spire and vestry, and situated on south-west corner of Fourth and E Streets in San Rafael, California. The interior is finished with California redwood and Oregon white pine, oiled and varnished. The building was consecrated July 21, 1872, by Right Rev. Bishop Kip." This quote and illustration are from a brochure titled San Rafael Illustrated and Described, published by W.W. Elliott & Co., in 1884. The brochure shows images of early San Rafael and was designed as a promotional piece, meant to attract new residents and investors to Marin County's most populous town. The original lithographs were made from the sketches of Mr. Chris Jorgensen, a teacher at the San Francisco Art School and noted artist.
