Description
The Japanese Americans of Turlock, California gathered to celebrate New Years in 1939. Discriminatory laws disallowed Japanese Americans from owning land but a few were able to lease farmland and cantaloupes became a primary crop. The Central California Cantaloupe Company, which Nisaburo Aibara helped organize, facilitated their agricultural endeavors. The company was headquartered in the pictured building as were other organizations that helped with economic and legal issues. The Turlock Social Hall was also a place for the Japanese Language School and Buddhist Temple services, as well as celebrations such as the New Year festivities.
