Description
Plaza Hotel, Orange, California, ca. 1900. Originally constructed in 1874 as a sanitarium and bath house known as the "Hygeian House" with funds raised by self-proclaimed doctor and health faddist, Emma Larkin, on the southwest corner of Glassell and Plaza Square. Image shows facade of two-story cement structure with balcony that ran around three sides, with a sidewalk and unpaved streets visible in the foreground. It was the first structure in the Plaza District not made of wood, and the first hotel in the city of Orange. Signage to the right of the front door reads "PUBLIC LIBRARY. " After failing as a sanitarium it continued to operate as a regular bath house. In April of 1876 the building was acquied by C.P. Webber and Ernest McGibbon and reopened as the Orange Hotel. It was later used as the first Orange Public library, which occupied the first floor from January 1884 until 1904. It was razed in 1905 and replaced by the Cuddeback Block.
