Description
In this photograph students from Kentfield carry their may pole to the May Day celebrations in Kentfield, California. The children wore white dresses and white shirts with colored ribbons to designate their school. A May Day celebration and may pole competition took place each year at Tamalpais Centre in Kentfield. All of the southern Marin schools participated. There were races, baseball games and of course a Queen of the May. 1909, marked the opening of the Tamalpais Centre, a gift of Mrs. A.E. Kent, to Marin County, located on 29 acres of land at the foot of Mt. Tamalpais. The intent of the Tamalpais Centre was to provide educational and recreational opportunities for Marin County residents.
