The Society of California Pioneers Louis Lask was born in Posen, Prussia on September 12, 1824. He immigrated to New York in 1842 and soon after moved to New Orleans. He spent four years as a clerk in a clothing store in Crescent City and then opened his own business. On December 17th, 1848 he left for Panama on board the steamship "Falcon". After a wait of six weeks in Panama he secured passage on the British vessel "John Ritson" for California. Mr. Lask contracted Panama fever and was confined to his berth for eighty days. He arrived in San Francisco on May 17th, 1849 and immediately entered into active business. In September of 1850 he relocated to Sacramento and operated a clothing store for a year. In 1852, after a trip to Europe, Mr. Lask relocated to San Francisco and resumed business. In 1857 he established a permanent clothing establishment in Marysville Autobiographies and Reminiscences of California Pioneers, p. 66-67, Vol. 8. This is a typed transcript, bound into a volume, of the member's autobiographical reminiscence created as an institutional record for the Society of California Pioneers. This reminiscence provides an account of Louis Lask's journey to California and his life afterward. Details regarding his employment history and business pursuits are included in the reminiscence.
