Description
The Selborne School, also known as Bates School, began in 1878 and was run by Octavius John Seymour Bates. It was a three-story school on Clark Street between Bayview and Clorinda Streets in the Gerstle Park neighborhood of San Rafael, California. In 1898, Bates left the school in the care of another Englishman, Charles Hitchcock. After being destroyed by fire in 1899, the school was rebuilt on a new site on Grand Avenue between Elm and Belle Streets in San Rafael. After incorporation in 1907, the school became known as the Hitchcock Military Academy. A new preparatory school for boys was then formed as an outgrowth of the Mt. Tamalpais Military Academy and the Hitchcock Military Academy. This new school was not a military academy, and was called the Tamalpais School. The school was sold again in 1955 to the Marist Society of California and named the St. Peter Chanel Seminary. Today the property is home to Marin Ballet School, the Marin Tennis Club, and Trinity Community Church.
