Description
This oil well became the largest producing well in California when Union Oil Company struck oil on the Chapman ranch. This well was put into production on March 11, 1919, and reportedly produced over eight thousand barrels a day. It pumped two hundred million barrels in the first five years. In 1921 the South West Shipbuilding at San Pedro built a steel tanker for the Union Oil Co. that was named La Placentia. It was the sister ship of the La Brea and Montebello. During WW II, La Placentia provided support for the warships on the high seas.
