Autobiography & Reminiscence of Timothy Leonard Barker, Oakland, 1901. The Society of California Pioneers
Timothy Leonard Barker was born in Bradford, New Haven County, Connecticut, on March 13th, 1828. In February of 1849 he became a member of the "Cayuga Joint Stock Co.". They left New York on Feb. 28th, 1849 and sailed from the lower harbor on March 2nd, arriving in San Francisco October 12th, 1849. The ship stopped in Callao, Peru for eight days. Barker's company worked in San Francisco and then split up. Barker and eighteen others were sent to work in the Southern mines (Stockton, Aqua Freo) until the end of December 1849. On Feb. 15th, 1850, the company voted to dissolve. Barker then went to work in other mines: Bear River and "Big Ravine". Leaving the mines, Barker went to work for Hermance and Stephen and Hermance and Burton, a Grocery firm in Sacramento, until 1852. Barker then went to Alameda County and farmed near Haywards. In September of 1855 Barker went back east, via Panama, returning December 31st, via Nicaragua. In the spring of 1856, Barker formed a partnership with L.A. Booth and Cyrus T. Wheeler establishing the firm of "Booth & Co." in Sacramento, but sold out interest in 1863 and went back east by Overland Stage, via Salt Lake to Connecticut. In 1864, Barker returned to S.F., again representing the firm "Booth & Co.". On January 1st, 1868, Barker became a member of the firm of "Wellman Peck & Co.", remaining a partner for twelve years. Barker married Mary R. Simpson in Oakland, June 1872. They had one daughter, Mary Simpson Barker. T.L. Barker was the Republican candidate for Mayor of Oakland and was defeated in 1893
Autobiographies and Reminiscences of California Pioneers, p.36-40, Vol. 1. This is a typed transcript, bound into a volume, of the member's autobiographical reminiscence created as an institutional record for the Society of California Pioneers. The original handwritten version exists in the member's Biographical File. This reminiscence includes a reference to a photograph of the member in a set of bound volumes, but there is no longer a photograph of this member in our collection. The reminiscence provides a detailed history of the Barker family. Both of T.L. Barker's grandfathers fought in the Revolutionary War. The reminiscence covers the period from 1828 to 1893.
