Description
The North Pacific Coast railroad ran narrow gauge trains, like the one pictured here in 1899, throughout Marin County, California. The route over White's Hill between Fairfax and Woodacre offered the greatest construction challenge for the railroad. The construction crew built two tunnels and six trestles in order to climb the hill. The North Shore Railroad, successor to the North Pacific Coast Railroad, realigned the route to eliminate the arduous climb over White's Hill. Efforts involved building two new trestles and a tunnel. This decreased travel time, and made the trip safer for passengers and train workers alike.
