Description
Residence of William J. Miller on the northeast corner of 5th & B Streets in San Rafael, California. Miller was the son of John Miller and great nephew of Timothy Murphy, one of the county's original land grantees. Miller built San Rafael's Marin Hotel, served on the Legislature from 1869-70 and was San Rafael's Mayor for six years. This illustration is from a brochure titled San Rafael Illustrated and Described, published by W.W. Elliott & Co., in 1884. The brochure shows images of early San Rafael and was designed as a promotional piece, meant to attract new residents and investors to Marin County's most populous town. The original lithographs were made from the sketches of Mr. Chris Jorgensen, a teacher at the San Francisco Art School and noted artist.
