Description
The San Francisco and Northwestern Railway's Engine No. 13 pulling picnic cars, circa 1900. Day excursionists and campers often took trains such as these to picnics and other outdoor adventures in and around Marin County. The engine's diamond stack, seen on the left, indicates an early wood burning locomotive. Engine No. 13 was built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1875 for the Santa Fe Railroad, then purchased by SF&NWRR, a subsidiary of Santa Fe, in 1903. In 1907 the railway became part of the Northwestern Pacific Railroad; Engine No. 13 continued to be used and was retired in 1929.
