Autobiography & Reminiscence of Luca Descalso, San Francisco, 1901. The Society of California Pioneers
Luca Descalso was born in Genoa, Italy on January 10, 1825. He arrived in the United States in 1845 and San Francisco by way of Cape Horn on the brig "Lalla", on December 12, 1849. He then took the Steamer "Senator" to Sacramento and mined at Coloma North mines from 1849 to 1850. In 1850 and 1851 Mr. Descalso manned a sloop from Petaluma to San Francisco and then went mining again at Sonora and Columbia Flat until March 1854, when he went to New York City. After a short stay in New York he and his new wife started for San Francisco by way of Panama. Mr. Descalso was a Mason by trade and assisted in the erection of the "Old City Hall", the Jenny Lind Theatre, and a Lighthouse at Umpqua, Washington. He also invested in Real Estate and from 1860 to 1877 he was engaged in teaming business. Mr. Descalso and family resided in Santa Rosa and San Francisco
Autobiographies and Reminiscences of California Pioneers, p. 22-25, Vol. 6. This is a typed transcript, bound into a volume, of the member's autobiographical reminiscence created as an institutional record for the Society of California Pioneers. This reminiscence includes a reference to a photograph of the member in a set of bound volumes, but there is no longer a photograph of this member in our collection. The period of time represented by this biography is 1845 to 1900. This account provides an outline of the life of Luca Descalso. Some specific dates are recounted, as are addresses and costs of real estate investments. Mr. Descalso names the mines he worked from 1849 to 1852. Two specific San Francisco events remembered by Mr. Descalso are Cora's speech before his hanging in 1856 and the great fire of 1851.
