Autobiography & Reminiscence of John Y. Hallock, New York City, NY, 1901. The Society of California Pioneers
John Youngs Hallock was born in New York, Feb. 27, 1825. On Jan. 24, 1849, he sailed from New York to San Francisco, via Cape Horn, on the ship "South Carolina" with Capt. Joseph Hamilton. They arrived in San Francisco June 30, 1849. Hallock soon established his business "Bennett & Hallock" which would later be consumed by the fire of 1850 and again by the fire of 1851. In 1852 he moved his business to the west side of Sansome Street, one door north of Sacramento Street, operating under the name "J.Y. Hallock & Co.". This business was devoted to hardware, window-glass, and paints
Autobiographies and Reminiscences of California Pioneers, p.105-108, Vol. 1. This is a typed transcript, bound into a volume, of the member's autobiographical reminiscence created as an institutional record for the Society of California Pioneers. The original handwritten version exists in the member's Biographical File. This reminiscence includes a reference to a photograph of the member in a set of bound volumes, but there is no longer a photograph of this member in our collection. This reminiscence covers the period from 1849 to approximately 1864. It provides family and business history. It begins with a description of Hallock's passage to San Francisco in 1849. Hallock offers some personal information regarding the well-esteemed Captain of the ship, "South Carolina". He also provides names and locations of businesses he shared land with.
