This map, issued in August 1914 by Mabry McMahan, illustrates his proposed development of Santa Venetia, in San Rafael, California. McMahan was responsible for filling in Santa Venetia's marshland and creating a series of canals, on which he hoped to create a luxury subdivision modeled after the Italian city of Venice. McMahan's plans failed to be realized due to the economic hardships of WWI. After WWII, San Venetia was developed into one of San Rafael's residential neighborhoods, although not in the style envisioned by McMahan.
