Description
Three young men pause in the midst of a dairy herd. Possibly the men are responsible for moving the cows out of the barn after they were milked. Dairy farming began in the early 1900's in Stanislaus County and the Turlock area after irrigation water was available as it allowed the growth of alfalfa. Once established this nutritious type of grass could be cut multiple times in one growing season. Herds of dairy cows could be kept in a small area and fed alfalfa rather than needing an acre per cow to provide enough grazing. Because dairy cows have to be milked two times each day, being able to keep them close to the milking area contributed to the growth of the dairy industry. Many people who immigrated from Portugal, especially the Azores, became dairy farmers in the Turlock area.
