Description
Pictured are ten men in front of Billy Shannon's Villa, in San Rafael, California, circa 1910. From about 1906 to 1914, Shannon's Villa was a saloon and training facility located on a triangular lot at the west end of 4th Street. Shannon was a former amateur lightweight champion who later turned professional. He operated the Villa as a combination restaurant-bar and training camp, which held a small ring featuring popular exhibition prizefights. Pictured, standing left to right, are: Grant Gorman; Billy Shannon; and George Sharkey. Pictured, seated left to right, are: George Schrieder; Ben Smith; Bob Shand; Van Gorman; George Proctor; Frankie Burns; and Frankie Smith.
