Description
Everett Mason is seen applying make-up to an actor for the 1958 production of Rough an' Ready. This play was first performed at the Mountain Theater in 1949. Waning audiences had cast doubt on the continuity of the Mountain Play in 1957, but thanks to community support, the show went on in 1958 and has continued, un-interrupted, to this day.
The Mountain Play Association began its annual production in an outdoor amphitheater on top of Mount Tamalpais, Marin County, in 1913. Shows run for several weekends beginning each May. This image is from a collection of scrapbooks, deposited with the California Room in 1975, by Mountain Play Association Director, Marion Hayes Cain.
