Description
St. Raphael's School, pictured here circa 1915, was located at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and A Street in San Rafael, California, next door to Mission San Rafael. It is one of California's original mission schools. St. Raphael's, right, was a three-story building with offices on the on the first floor, classrooms on the second, and a meeting hall on the third. It opened on August 12, 1889 and was staffed by Dominican Sisters. During its first year of operation the school instructed sixty girls. The church, center, burned in 1919. St. Raphael School still exists today in downtown San Rafael, California. It is a co-ed school serving elementary through junior high school children.
