Description
Float in May Day Parade, Orange, California, 1949, on South Glassell Street. Image shows float decorated with a swan at the front with ribbons as reins held by a young woman dressed in a winged costume. Behind the float is the Plaza Theater with "THRILL SHOWS / AFRICA SPEAKS / GOOMA GOOMA" on the marquee. Lois's Beauty Salon is at the left, and part of the OWL CIGAR sign painted on the side of the Ehlen and Grote building can be seen along a small access road. Crowds line the street and watch from upstairs windows. The May Festival, which began in 1933 and also included the May Day Parade, continued to be held until 1991.
