Description
Orange County Hospital Nurse's Home after the Santa Ana River flooded, West Chapman Avenue, Orange, California, March 3, 1938. Image shows bird's eye view of the Nurse's Home with several women standing on the steps watching two figures wade through the knee-high water near three parked automobiles in front of the building. Additional buildings can be seen in the background. The hospital was designed by architect Frederick H. Eley and constructed in 1914 as the Orange County Poor Farm where residents raised their own vegetables, hogs and chickens and picked fruit from a 23-acre Valencia orange grove. Poor farm was phased out in the Depression as too expensive. Hospital was expanded in 1963, and the name was changed to Orange County Medical Center in 1969. Buildings were sold in 1976 to the University of California, and later became the UCI Medical Center. [See also OPL3647] Photographic print B&w 20.3 x 25.4 cm.
