Description
The Mt Tamalpais & Muir Woods engine No. 8, pictured near downtown Mill Valley, California. This railway used Shay locomotives, seen here. Shays are recognizable by their vertically mounted cylinders; this unique engine configuration gave them the extra strength needed to climb Mt. Tamalpais' six and seven percent grades. The Mt. Tamalpais and Muir Woods Railroad ran from 1896 until 1929, from downtown Mill Valley, California to near the summit of Mt. Tamalpais, with a second line descending the West side of Mt. Tamalpais to Muir Woods beginning in 1907.
