The Society of California Pioneers Ward, born Mar. 19, 1829 in Boston, worked as a clerk and left home (April 1849) on the "Unicorn" from N. J. to Cal. At Valparaiso he took the "Magdella" arriving in San Francisco (Dec. 9, 1849), then Sacramento and to Nevada Creek to mine. Failing, he returned to S.F. to join an expedition to the Rogue and Umpqua Rivers (Oreg.). In Boston he clerked at E.T. Lonny & Co.(1851-2), then went with Ward & Co. in Chile becoming an agent of the Pacific Steam Navigation Co., Valparaiso (1859). Back in S.F.(1862) with a wife and daughter, his uncle put him in charge of the San Lorenzo Ranch (Alameda Co.). In 1863 and 1865 he laid out 2 additions to Hayward. He helped organize "The Hayward Guards", was a director of Brighton Market, and belonged to the Pioneer Assn. He helped create the Alameda Co. Agricultural Soc, (Hayward,1867) and the H.A. Coal Mining Co.(1873). In 1875, the Wards moved to S. Francisco de Lemache, Chile, with Ward returning a few times to Cal Autobiographies and Reminiscences of California Pioneers, p. 129-197, Vol. 3. This is a typed transcript, bound into a volume, of the member's autobiographical reminiscence created as an institutional record for the Society of California Pioneers. The original handwritten version exists in the member's biographical file. Ward's account (1829-1891)- one who loved California but lived abroad - includes stories of Pres. Cleveland, travel, the railroad in Alameda County, a train trip with a mind-reader, the assassination of Lincoln, and the growth of Hayward. A land deed in Nevada City and a transcript of his mining poem "Deer Creek 1849" appear. Ward tells of ships, Masons, squatters on his San Lorenzo Ranch(Alameda County), businesses, the first fire company(1865) in Hayward, and the yachts in a race (1887) in Mass. He tells of a cholera epidemic in Chile, José Manuel Balmaceda's presidency and U.S. relations with Chile. Included is a legend about 2 lovers, Isabel and Juan and a poem about his family.
