Description
Passengers leave the Mt. Tamalpais and Muir Woods Railway at West Point, in 1914. This railroad was one mode of transportation used to get to the outdoor amphitheater on Mt. Tamalpais to watch the annual Mountain Play. Passengers depicted here were heading up the mountain to watch the second annual play, Shakuntala. The Mountain Play Association began its annual production in an outdoor amphitheater on top of Mount Tamalpais, Marin County, in 1913. Shows run for several weekends, beginning each May. This image is from a collection of scrapbooks, deposited with the California Room in 1975, by Mountain Play Association Director, Marion Hayes Cain.
