Description
Located at 245 South Kalmia, the Carnegie Library was Escondido’s second library replacing a small wooden structure in 1910. Funds to build the new library were donated by Andrew Carnegie for who the library was named. The Carnegie Library was in use for 46 years and was torn down in 1956 when city officials decided that replacing the library was more cost efficient than remodeling. During the demolition of the Carnegie Library trustee discovered a time capsule laid into the cornerstone of the building. The cornerstone, the tin box, and the items it contained were all donated to the Escondido Historical Society.
