Beatrice Howitt and Alice Oge are pictured swimming in the San Rafael Canal; it was a popular place to swim and socialize. Beatrice Howitt was the daughter of Dr. Henry Orton Howitt who practiced medicine in San Rafael, California beginning in 1893. He was a founder of the Cottage Hospital in San Rafael and attended patients there. Beatrice's mother's name was Alice, her sister's name was Edith, and her brother's name was Henry.
