Description
Architect Frank Lloyd Wright was selected to design the complex. In his proposal, Wright emphasized his theory of organic architecture. The related groupings of long, horizontal buildings which constitute the Civic Center and gracefully link several rolling hills, stand as testament to Wright's philosophy. Controversy occurred in January 1961, mid-way through the project, when the newly-convened Board of Supervisors decided to halt construction. Opposition to the stoppage was heard when the Marin Independent Journal newspaper conducted a straw vote showing 7 out of 8 residents supported the completion of the project. Construction resumed a week later and Supervisor Walter Blair was recalled. The Marin County Civic Center is a national and state designated historic landmark. It is located in San Rafael, California.
