Description
This house, now referred to as the Woods House, was originally built by Charles Hartshorn a member of the “Illinois Colony”, immigrants from Illinois around the turn of the century. There is some debate about when the house was built as documents in the San Diego County recorder’s office claim that the land was not sold to Hartshorn until 1892, but some historians believe the house was completed in 1888. In 1942 Dr. Wood and his wife Jennylind Monteleone purchased the house and remodeled and built on to it. Ms. Woods continued to live in the house until her death in 1979. In 1974, however, Ms. Woods had sold the house and surrounding land to the City of San Marcos with the stipulations that she could live in the house until her death and that the land be named after her and her husband. The City of San Marcos now uses the land for Woodland Park and the house for many different functions.
