Description
Mount Tamalpais Academy was founded in 1890 by Dr. Arthur Crosby, who was also President of the Board of Trustees. The board consisted of many prominent San Rafael men including William Babcock, Arthur W. Foster and Robert J. Trumbull. The School was first located at Fourth and E Streets in San Rafael, but by 1891 moved to its permanent location of Mission and Cottage Avenues. Cavalry was a part of the military training and many of the boys brought their horses to school. In 1902, a mounted artillery made Mount Tamalpais Military Academy unique in the West. In 1925, Dr. Crosby's widow sold the school to A.L. Stewart, a local businessman. At that time the school's name was changed to the San Rafael Military Academy. The San Rafael Military Academy academics continued in the tradition of its predecessor until it closed in 1971. Since 1972 the property has been home to Marin Academy which has no military association.
