Description
A "pega de touros" (bull tackle) is a unique event of the Portuguese-style corrida (bullfight) and is only done after the bull has been fought by a cavaleiro (horseman). The team lines up single-file behind the cabo (leader) facing the bull. The bull lowers its head (and horns) as it charges while the first man attempts to go over its head and grab it around the neck to secure its head. Meanwhile the other team members are to surround the bull and use their combined weight to subdue it to a standstill while one of the men pulls tightly on its tail. The bull then is released. This method was originally used to hold a bull still long enough for it to be branded. In this photograph the fighting-bull is far from subdued as one man has been tossed as he tried to grab the bull, a second is attempting the manuever and the third gets ready to make his move. Note the facial expressions of the spectators as they watch these men participate in a traditional Portuguese-American event.
