Description: This is a chapter from an oral history of UCSB emeritus faculty and plant anatomist Katherine Esau, conducted by librarian David Russell. She discusses her family's immigration to the United States in 1922 and their new home in California, her first plant breeding job in Oxnard, her next position breeding sugar beets at the Spreckels Sugar Company in Salinas, and her eventual decision to continue her education at University of California, Davis.
