Description
Crate label for Sunflower Brand Valencia oranges, Olive Hillside Groves Inc., Olive, California, 1925. The color lithograph label is illustrated with a large golden sunflower on a black background. The text "VALENCIAS" is in black against a pale yellow bar across the top. Printed beneath it in light blue is "OLIVE / SUNFLOWER / BRAND." To the left is a medallion-shaped logo for "PURE GOLD / MUTUAL ORANGE DISTRIBUTORS / CALIFORNIA" and to the right in small text is printed "NOTICE / This fruit is patented / and licensed under U.S. patent / No. 1529461 dated / March 10, 1925." Printed in lower right corner is, "OLIVE-HILLSIDE GROVES Inc. / ORANGE COUNTY / OLIVE - CALIFORNIA / GROWN IN U.S.A. / MUTUAL ORANGE DISTRIBUTORS." Printed across lower left corner is "LITHO IN USA WESTERN LITHO CO. LOS ANGELES 328" Olive Hillside Groves was located on Orange-Olive Road, by the railroad tracks, and was the first packing house founded in Olive, on September, 1914. In December of 1927, it was completely destroyed by fire and was later rebuilt on the same site, continuing operation until around 1960. Lithograph Color 27.6 x 27.8 cm.
