Description
Black and white map of the racecourse of the Cycling Road Race of the 1984 Summer Olympic Games. The headline at the top of the page reads, "Mission Viejo Hosts Two Olympic Firsts." The streets on the perimeter of the map are: Cordova Road (top of map), O'Neill Road (right side of map), Oso Parkway (bottom), San Diego Freeway (lower left), and Los Alisos Boulevard (top left). The racecourse is designated on the map with bold lines representing the streets and is located on the upper right portion of the map. The racecourse is comprised of the following streets: O'Neill Road to Marguerite Parkway to Cordova to Crucero to Hidalgo to Vista Del Lago to Marguerite Parkway to La Paz Road to O'Neill Road. O'Neill Road was later named Olympiad Road in commemoration of this Olympic event. Cordova Road was later named Mustang Run for the mascot of the later-built Trabuco Hills High School. The text on the map reads, "The premier event of the 1984 Olympics takes place on Sunday, July 29, in Mission Viejo. Cyclists from 126 nations will race over the rolling, hilly streets of this community in the 70k (approximately 50 miles) Individual Road Race for women and the 190k (approximately 120 miles) Individual Road Race for men. It is also the first time in the history of the Olympics that women will be competing in this Olympic event. Live television coverage is planned for the events, which are expected to attract a crowd of over 100,000. Tickets are not necessary and race-watchers will line the course through the community streets. A limited number of bleacher seats will be available. The citizens of Mission Viejo have shown enthusiastic support for the competition, which should provide a fittingly spectacular start for the '84 Olympics!" At the bottom of the map is the schedule of events. The text reads, "Olympic Cycling Itinerary, 9:00 A.M. Women's Individual Road Race 70k, 1:00 P.M. Men's Individual Road Race 190k, 6:30 P.M. Awards Ceremony." There are also symbols on the map representing parking locations and a key defining those symbols; a car represents a parking lot, a bus represents a Park & Ride lot, the Mission Viejo Realty sign represents office locations of Mission Viejo Realty. There is also an Olympic symbol of a cyclist at the top of the map and "c1984 Mission Viejo Realty" at the bottom of the map.
