The Society of California Pioneers James F. Hough was born in New York City, August 30, 1828. He left New York City February 6, 1849 with his cousin and joined the "Knickerbocker Company" in an overland journey to California via Lieutenant Emory's Route. They crossed the Colorado River and entered California August 29, 1849. From San Pedro he traveled to San Francisco on the Brig "Colonel Fremont", and arrived October 25, 1849. After a brief trip to Stockton in search of work in the mines, Hough returned to San Francisco and began to work for cousin as a clerk. Early in 1850, Hough again went to the mines, first near Coloma and then "Yankee Jims" in Placer County. He worked in Placer County until 1852. In 1853 Hough returned to San Francisco determined to find more secure work. He went back to clerking and remained in the manufacturing industry until retirement Autobiographies and Reminiscences of California Pioneers, p.126-129, Vol. 1. This is a typed transcript, bound into a volume, of the member's autobiographical reminiscence created as an institutional record for the Society of California Pioneers. The original handwritten version exists in the member's Biographical File. This reminiscence includes a reference to a photograph of the member in a set of bound volumes, but there is no longer a photograph of this member in our collection. This reminiscence covers the period of James F. Hough's life from 1849 to 1901. It offers a description of his overland journey to California from New York, including a list of places he traveled through. Brief family history is also included. Hough names all the companies he was employed with in San Francisco.
