1910 view of the first Tavern of Tamalpais on the summit of Mt. Tam, which opened in 1896 and subsequently expanded in 1900. The Tavern was famous throughout the Bay Area for its fine dining room and comfortable accommodations. In 1923 it burned to the ground, but was rebuilt in 1924 and remained in operation until World War II. Several smaller fires were set by the engines as they passed under the wooden arch seen in the center of this photograph. The Mt. Tamalpais and Mill Valley Railroad transported visitors from downtown Mill Valley, California up to the Tavern, from 1896 until 1929.
