Description
Chapman Well #1 at the corner of Rose Dr. and Alta Vista St. Construction of the well began in 1917 and was completed in 1919. In 1919 it sprang a gusher that lasted for several days and drew attention to Placentia oil fields. The well produced 5,000 barrels a day, reaching two million barrels in first five years. The well was shut down in 1990. An historic plaque dedicated to Chapman Well #1 was installed in the Emerald Isle Senior Apartments in 2006. Emerald Isle is built on the site of Chapman Well #1.
