Description
A photograph of a bridge that is a variation of the Howe truss design. It was one of the most popular early designs, patented by William Howe in 1840. Truss design became more standardized and steel replace iron for structural work. With the introduction of automobiles bridges had to be designed for heavier loads, but except for the use of larger and stronger members, only minor refinements occured until about 1940. Stanislaus County is part of a large floodplain and any bridges built over the rivers had to withstand the force of high and fast flowing waters. Some of the bridges prior to this style were washed away.
