Description
Dan Totheroh, pictured at his typewriter in 1957. Totheroh had just moved back to the Bay Area after many years working as a playwright in New York and Hollywood. The Mountain Play Association offered him the directorship for the revival of his own work, Tamalpa, which had premiered at the Mountain Theater in 1921, and had been performed six times. Totheroh was also the author of several other plays, written especially for the Mountain Theater, including Flamenca and Rough an' Ready. The Mountain Play Association began its annual production in an outdoor amphitheater on top of Mount Tamalpais, Marin County, in 1913. Shows run for several weekends, beginning each May. Since its start, the plays have gained popularity and now draw large audiences. This image is from a collection of scrapbooks, deposited with the California Room in 1975, by Mountain Play Association Director, Marion Hayes Cain.
