Description
May 3, 1809 document from Jose Maria Estudillo in Monterey to the Commissioner of the town of San Jose, discussing the capture of a fugitive Native American named Secundino who has been charged with several thefts, and is a suspect in a rape case. The Commissioner is ordered to transport the captive to Monterey. The letter ends with this admonition: "With regard to the care of the Indians who are taken prisoner in that town, I must insist that it is the responsibility of the Mission to provide for them. However, if the Mission does not do so, no one else will and they will be held prisoner without food until they die. God keep you many years." compound object original, transcription & translation(Pueblo Papers)
