The Society of California Pioneers George Albrecht Kuner was born on October 9th, 1819 at Lindau, Germany. In 1848 he left Germany for America, arriving in New York on October 28th. Soon after he heard news of the gold discovery in California he decided to join three friends and seek passage west. He sailed on the ship "Sutton", leaving New York on January 1st and arriving in San Francisco on the 22nd of July 1849. In San Francisco Mr. Kuner found employment at "Moffat & Company's Assaying Office" as an engraver. The first piece of work he was commissioned to do in San Francisco was to engrave a set of steel dies for the creation of a ten dollar coin. He was also given the honor of engraving the "great seal of the State of California" Autobiographies and Reminiscences of California Pioneers, p. 57-62, Vol. 8. This is a typed transcript, bound into a volume, of the member's autobiographical reminiscence created as an institutional record for the Society of California Pioneers. The original handwritten version exists in the member's biographical file. This reminiscence provides an account of George A. Kuner's journey to California. The author describes his voyage from New York, including details regarding life aboard the ship and events that occurred during his passage. One such event is the suicide of a fellow passenger while out at sea. Some background family history is provided as well as Mr. Kuner's business history. Mr. Kuner was involved in the engraving and assaying business in San Francisco. The time period represented by this reminiscence is from 1848 to 1854.
